OBD uses generic modeling constructs. Domain specific modeling is left to ontologies. OBD has no information model for representing genotype-phenotype associations.

Phenotype descriptions in OBD can be pre-coordinated or post-coordinated. Post-coordinated descriptions make use of what is sometimes called the EQ model. See the PATO:About page for more details on this methodology.

EQ based descriptions can be expressed as intersection-based class expressions.
